Halloween Blue Moon

10/31/2020

A Blue Moon is not just a beer. It's the second full moon in a month.
It's relatively rare, happening only about every two and a half years.
There is a full moon on Halloween every 19 years or so BUT not all time zones.
A full moon on Halloween for everyone? That hasn't happened since 1944*!
I hope you all had a chance to go outside to marvel in it's glory.
If not, here are some photos I took this evening.
*Disappointingly, this little bit of trivia makes Hocus Pocus inaccurate because there wasn't a full moon on Halloween in 1993, which was needed to bring the Sanderson Sisters back to life.
One All Hallows' Eve, when the moon is around
A virgin will summon thee from under the ground.
So, for the love of 2020, if you're a virgin, DO NOT LIGHT A BLACK CANDLE TONIGHT! Thank you.

Today is the day O' the Irish and as a mostly Irish lass I like to celebrate by wearing green, drinking Guinness and eating Irish grub. And, nine years ago (wow how time flies) a few of my friends and I celebrated by dressing up in our best leprechaun inspired garb and ventured to the Gas Lamp on the Coaster to have boxties, drink Irish libations and listen to traditional Irish tunes at our favorite Irish pub, The Field.

There's an Irish saying, "May the best day of your past be the worst day of your future." Topping that day makes for a pretty fun-filled future!

On the Twelfth Day of Christmas...

my true love gave to me:

Picture
Day 12
Date: January 5th
Celebration: Epiphany Eve & St. John Neumann
        First bishop in America

Gift: Twelve Drummers Drumming
Meaning: The twelve points of the Apostles' Creed
Now, to celebrate Twelfth Night, the eve of Epiphany, correctly you'll need a cake, a bean and a king (very similar to the King Cake of Marti Gras).  This morning I am getting an epidural steroid injection so I won't be celebrating this year but now that I know so much, maybe next year!

Thanks for playing!!!!

On the First Day of Christmas....

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!
For the next 12 days, I will be going through the 12 Day of Christmas, a tradition celebrated in Europe since the middle ages. We all know the song, but I bet most of us have no idea what those 12 days actually are. No, it's not just a song about someone frivilously purchasing their true love gifts for 12 days, it's a series of Christian celebrations leading up to the Twelfth Night (a party making the end of medieval "winter" (All Hallow's Eve to Twelfth Night), not the comedy by William Shakespeare - although the play was likely written as entertainment for said celebration).

So, without further adieu...

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me:

Day 1
Date: December 25th
Celebration: The birth of Jesus
Gift: A partridge in a pear tree

I have had some pretty memorable costumes throughout the years but this was my first, but not my last, group themed Halloween. This Throwback Third Thursday (#tbtt) is for when 8th grade Caitlin and crew were our own alternative version of Rainbow Brite and the Color Kids!!!

Throwback Third Thursday - November 2015

Thanksgiving is exactly one week away so this Throwback Third Thursday (#tbtt) I'm giving a shout out to the family I will be spending Thanksgiving with and that I am ever so thankful for! I am who I am because of their loving insanity. They are the best!  I haven't gotten to go home for Thanksgiving since I moved to Texas. This year, late November is not only Thanksgiving but also my nephew's 1st birthday and my dad's 60th birthday. I have had enough FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) over the past 3+ years that I was not going to miss milestones like these. So even though I'll be turning around to come home for Christmas less than a month later (the usual reason I don't come home for Thanksgiving), this year I will be making the trip to spend a long weekend with the Currys celebrating.

From Right: Dad (Peter), Mom (Cathy), Uncles Chris, Matt, Eddie, Aunt Katie, and finally, Uncle Tim
not pictured - the aunt & uncles' lovely partners in crime but for whom I am just as thankful for: Mary, Kathy, Denny, Jim, and finally, Peggy.
oh...and we can't forget all the minions: Erin, Greg & Nolan, Callie & Tyler, Emily & Sam, Alex & Jeff, Megan, Annie, Sam & Derek, Carleen and Miranda
And most importantly: Grandma and Grandpa

While many people were on-line this month attacking or defending (A), I have been wondering why, at the beginning of November, it has been so darn difficult to find (B).  All I wanted was a cute, festive Thanksgiving turkey to put on my new mantle; a single, simple decoration to get us amped for the holiday.  Surprisingly, I couldn’t find turkeys anywhere!  I finally found this goofy little gem tucked back behind some pumpkins on a clearance shelf (80% off!) at Hobby Lobby while on a mission to find gadgets and tools for working on my lion bones. Even stores whose main purpose is to aid in adorning your dining room tables with lavish tablescapes (where Thanksgiving takes place) had minimal fall décor and NO TURKEYS. Before we know it, Thanksgiving is going to be a forgotten holiday. Stores are already bypassing it going from Halloween directly to Christmas. I’m not asking for much.  Just some gobble gobble. I applaud stores like Nordstom and REI for not putting up any Christmas decorations until November 27th. One holiday at a time people. Maybe it will remind us to actually be thankful for things leading up to Thanksgiving rather than complaining about the color of the cup our $5 latte comes in.

I’m very happy about my new Turkey friend.  He sums up the season pretty well.  I am thankful for the ample hours of entertainment football provides in the fall after all.  TOUCHDOWN!!!

Throwback Third Thursday - October 2015

Over the past few years, I am sure you have come to notice that Halloween is my jam!  Halloween has always been my jam.  And in 1995 (#tbtt) it was no different.  My best friends Markie, Kalista and I as the oldest (and therefore) coolest girls in school (at a school of approx. 70 kids grades 1-6, and the only three girls in the 6th grade, that wasn't a very taxing accomplishment) decided to attend the school Halloween parade dressed as Mickey, Minnie and Pluto.  Oh, but not just ANY standard version of little Disney friends, no, no, NO we went as Mickey, Minnie and Pluto from Rock Around the Mouse, an ever so bitchin’ cassette tape I had growing up and you better believe I had that song blasting in my bright yellow boombox all day.

We're in the middle.  Markie is Minnie, I'm Mickey and Kalista has the dog nose as Pluto rocking the Seau jersey.  Aren't we cute!
(And, yes, she's Pluto, not Goofy... I don't exactly remember why but that was a conscious decision.)

Throwback Third Thursday - June 2015

Throwback Third Thursday (#tbtt) is a tribute to the dude who's taught me the ways of the world.  This year I share turning 31 with the celebration of awesome dad's everywhere, which I am totally cool with because I have the awesomest dad of 'em all!
