While many people were on-line this month attacking or defending (A), I have been wondering why, at the beginning of November, it has been so darn difficult to find (B).  All I wanted was a cute, festive Thanksgiving turkey to put on my new mantle; a single, simple decoration to get us amped for the holiday.  Surprisingly, I couldn’t find turkeys anywhere!  I finally found this goofy little gem tucked back behind some pumpkins on a clearance shelf (80% off!) at Hobby Lobby while on a mission to find gadgets and tools for working on my lion bones. Even stores whose main purpose is to aid in adorning your dining room tables with lavish tablescapes (where Thanksgiving takes place) had minimal fall décor and NO TURKEYS. Before we know it, Thanksgiving is going to be a forgotten holiday. Stores are already bypassing it going from Halloween directly to Christmas. I’m not asking for much.  Just some gobble gobble. I applaud stores like Nordstom and REI for not putting up any Christmas decorations until November 27th. One holiday at a time people. Maybe it will remind us to actually be thankful for things leading up to Thanksgiving rather than complaining about the color of the cup our $5 latte comes in.

I’m very happy about my new Turkey friend.  He sums up the season pretty well.  I am thankful for the ample hours of entertainment football provides in the fall after all.  TOUCHDOWN!!!

Not the Aggie Way

I just submitted this letter to multiple members of the 12th Man Foundation administration, ticket center and Texas A&M disability services in hopes to get someone's attention.  The special needs seating situation at last night's football game was complete unacceptable.

From the Disability Services website: "There are designated sections in Kyle Field (consideration seating) for students with special health needs who are unable to stand during the entire game and for students using a wheelchair or other mobility device."

Congratulations....

To whom it may concern:

There has been a major overcrowding issue within the Consideration Seating area of Kyle Field this season.  This section requires ticket holders to be seated but the amount of tickets sold for this section does not allow the space for the holder to, in fact, be seated.  This is a major liability issue for the stadium and the Consideration Seating section needs to be renumbered taking into consideration that many of the ticket holders sitting in this section are not there because they don’t want to stand during the game but because they are physically unable.  Breaking attendance records should not come before the wellbeing of your patrons.

At this week’s game against Ole Miss (October 11, 2014) my ticket was for section 236, 3rd row, seat 7, however, I was unable to sit in my designated seat.  This wasn’t an issue of other patrons sitting in incorrect seats; it was an issue of overcrowding.  [Included] is a photo demonstrating how we were attempting to fit in the space allotted.

There were four of us displaced from our purchased seats in my row alone.  The other three ticket holders were able to stand on empty bleachers close to our section but I am physically unable as I am a physically disabled student and require Consideration Seating to attend football games.

As pictured, I tried sitting on the edge of the seat, leaning forward but was in too much pain to endure this position for more than half a quarter.  I asked the attendant, who was being as helpful as he could, to see a supervisor but the supervisor was of no help.  All they did was check that we were all holding tickets for this section, which we all were, but did nothing to alleviate the situation.  In pain, I asked the attendant if I could get a chair to sit in the wheelchair area but he said that is only available when set up before the game.  Since I was under the impression my ticket would allow me enough space to sit, I could not have possibly been able to set this up before the game.  I had to sit by myself on the ledge of the stairs, which I would assume is against fire code, as there were no other seating options available to me, as informed by said attendant.

As mentioned above, this section requires ticket holders to be seated and, therefore, needs to provide enough room for ALL ticket holders in this section to sit.   Actions should be taken to alleviate this situation to prevent any potentially more serious situations for disabled patrons from occurring.

Thank you,
Caitlin

Throwback Third Thursday - September 2014

9/18/2014

FOOTBALL IS HERE!!!!  Throwback Third Thursday (#tbtt) this month is in honor of just that, thinking back to one of the most epic endings to a football game I have ever experienced - the 2003 Apple Cup!  Everything below was taken from the "Go Huskies" photo page on the first website I created, kayteland.tripod.com.

OK. . .so the game started out as a dud but leave it to UW to come back in the last 5 minutes of the fourth quarter to create the most intense "game" of the season.  There was so much excitement you couldn't see straight.  It was a great end to a crappy season.  Way to go out with a bang boys!
Picture
Yeah there were moments when we just wanted to pull Cody off the field because a 5 yr old girl would have played better than him, but he has his moments and that's just the way he plays the game and we love the kid and will miss him anyways.
Picture
Coach Keith Gilbertson agrees with officials, signaling a first down for the Huskies after they recovered a fumble in the second quarter (they did something good early in the game ... we knew there was hope).
Picture
Step 1: WSU quarterback Josh Swogger throws the ball as he is dragged down by Roc Alexander.
Step 2: Marquis Cooper intercepts and goes for a touchdown with 14 seconds remaining in the game.
Picture
REGGIE! REGGIE! REGGIE!
Catching one of seven passes for 59 yards, giving him 30 career receptions against WSU
Picture
True freshman Corey Williams catches the game-winning touchdown with 1:10 left over WSU's Erik Coleman. Said Coleman: "I felt I had an interception. I felt the ball go by my fingertips."
Picture
With seconds remaining in the game the security guards and campus police lined the track as the loud speaker warned all spectators that no one is allowed on the field after the game ... YEAH RIGHT! As soon as the time ran out and the team rushed the field, so did the entire student section of the stands. Everyone wanted their chance to rejoice our amazing victory with the team! Some fans tried to tear down the goal posts after we rallied for a 27-19 victory over the eighth-ranked Cougars, beating them for the 6th time in a row!!! APPLE CUP GOES TO UDUB ...

What is the month of September?  Start of fall?  Everyone is back in school?  Pumpkin flavored everything is back?

No, no, no.  September is the official start of FOOTBALL SEASON and this month's Throwback Third Thursday (#tbtt) is dedicated to just that!

I have supported many football teams throughout the years.  I grew up a Charger fan watching dad's blood pressure rise every Sunday and occasional Monday or Thursday, I still have enough vials of green and gold glitter to last a lifetime, and I can WOOF and WHOOP with the best of em.

So, while I may bleed Maroon & White right now (GO AGGIES), I also bleed:
Powder Blue, White & Gold (San Diego Chargers)
Red, White & Blue (San Dieguito Browns '97)
Green, Gold & Blue (La Costa Canyon Mavericks '98-'01)
Navy & Sky Blue (Salthill/Knocknacarra, Galway City -- Gaelic Football '04)
Purple & Gold (University of Washington Huskies '02-'05)
In honor of the recent NSync reunion, here's a little 'Dirty Pop' à la the LCC Maverick cheerleaders (look closely, I am the one in the middle with a big blue cast on my foot - you can hear my dad talking about it in the video).
