Happy Birthday to Me!

6/21/2016

Today I turn 32. I thought I would start this year of my life off right by doing something a little zany to make myself feel better about my ear pain that can't be explained and the other annoyances I cannot control, so... I died my hair pink! I feel a bit like a My Little Pony and it will fade pretty quickly but I totally love it! In my opinion, it was a good decision on my part.
And I'm spending my birthday like I have spent many others... seeing a Disney movie! Always be young at heart!

Throwback Third Thursday (#tbtt) is a tribute to the dude who's taught me the ways of the world.  This year I share turning 31 with the celebration of awesome dad's everywhere, which I am totally cool with because I have the awesomest dad of 'em all!

Happy Birthday Mommy!

Throwback Third Thursday (#tbtt) is all about my mom this month because today is her birthday!  I have the best mom a girl could ask for and I am so thankful for everything she does for me, including talking to me on the phone almost every day while I'm driving home from the lab.  I love you mom!!!

Throwback Third Thursday - June 2014

Right now I am in New York City celebrating my 30th birthday with family and friends.  This Throwback Third Thursday (#tbtt) is from the last time I was in New York, exactly 26 years ago (June 1988).  A lot has changed in New York City since then, most notably, the skyline looks a bit different now.  While I walk through the 9/11 Memorial & Museum tomorrow, I will be thinking about how I had the chance so many years ago to take a photo at the top of the twin towers (bottom) and see them standing tall from the Staten Island ferry (top) and how incredibly tragic it is those photos can't be recreated today.

Happy 80th Birthday Jane Goodall!

Picture
I am sure that if you talk to any person who is involved with animals they will tell you that Jane Goodall made an impact in their life in some way or another.  I  have always liked animals but it was reading Jane Goodall's book in the 4th grade that really influenced my decision that working with animals in a capacity more than just taking care of them was something I wanted to pursue as a career.  As a 10 year old I decided I wanted to BE her.  I went to college with the intentions of becoming an ethology primatologist and while my focus has changed from apes to terrestrial carnivores and I have thrown some biotechnology in the mix when I was convinced way back when that never wanted to do anything micro, I would not be where I am today without the drive and determination reading that book instilled in me.  The work she has done in the 80 years of her life has changed mine and I can't be anything but grateful.  Happy Birthday Jane!

My sister, Erin, my best friend, Markie, & Me - SeaWorld 1991

June 21, 1991

This photo was taken 22 years ago tomorrow at SeaWorld on my 7th birthday.  We saw Shamu, touched dolphins, starfish and manta rays, were spit on by walruses and climbed until we couldn't climb anymore through the nets at Shipwreck Cove.

Things I would like to point out about the awesomeness of this photo:
● Acid-wash & Floral Print Jeans
● Scrunchie
● Fanny Pack (which I still have btw)
● Neon Bow

And, how many of these did I see for sale at Target yesterday?  All of them.  However, no one who buys those retro inspired items will rock them like we did in the early 90's!

I spent that birthday at a SeaWorld very different from the SeaWorld you'd go to today.  There were no rides and practically everything was hands on.  The price to get into the park was $25 and parking was free.  Now there are more rides than exhibits and it costs $79 just to get through the gate (and that's after paying $15 to park).  I can't dog on them too much though because SeaWorldCares does do a lot of good conservation-wise, their parks just don't exactly show it now.
