My Life is Crap

Thowback Third Thursday - December 2014

12/18/2014

Here we go again....

...but this time in the other direction. Throwback Third Thursday (#tbtt) looks back to August 2012 when my dad and I made the trip from CA to TX via Route 66. I picked my dad up in Austin yesterday and now we are completing the circle taking the southern route back to CA so Paughey can join us at home for the holidays! It hasn't been the same the last couple of years without him there. We'll see if this trip is doable enough to be repeated in future years but it will be A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS having him there this one!

Have you ever thought that Santa watching little children while they're sleeping is a bit creepy, well my cousin and her like named friend have the Christmas song for you.  Enjoy!

Cheetah Fun Fact

A cheetah's tail is more than just a ornament. Like the rudder of a boat, their tail keeps their body in balance while they are running at top speeds helping them steer and allowing them to make directional changes and sharp turns.  And, while not quite as obvious as the wagging tail of a dog, their tail can also act as an emotional cue.  Tail flicks indicate some kind of stimulation and have been suggested to be associated with estrous.  During my daily observations of the Cheetah Conservation Fund Centre cheetahs, I had to count tail flicks.  These observations will be compared to corresponding hormone levels (found in the poop I collected) to see if there is a correlation.

Don't think that just because you live in a big city you are exempt from wildlife. On November 29th a mountain lion was spotted in Beverly Hills, the second recent sighting of a big cat east of the 405 Freeway.  Mountain lions call the Santa Monica Mountains and Topanga State Park, west of the 405, and the Angeles National Forest, north of Pasadena, home. This particular cat wasn't collared so they don't know if it's a State Park cat on holiday or if it's a cat that has a knack for keeping cryptic in the fancy digs of 90210.

Although the sighting was originally a tweet made by a Beverly Hills local (right), I was made aware of this sighting from a post on the Urban Carnivores Facebook page. Urban Carnivores is a website dedicated to keeping people informed on the carnivores you might run into in Los Angeles and Ventura counties with up-to-date news and the latest in local scientific research on mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes, etc. The fact there is a need for this type of website goes to show you need to stay alert wherever you are.  So, keep in mind, though you may be somewhere urban, there may be something wild lurking around the corner and wild will not give way urban so step aside.
