Throwback Third Thursday - June 2014

Right now I am in New York City celebrating my 30th birthday with family and friends.  This Throwback Third Thursday (#tbtt) is from the last time I was in New York, exactly 26 years ago (June 1988).  A lot has changed in New York City since then, most notably, the skyline looks a bit different now.  While I walk through the 9/11 Memorial & Museum tomorrow, I will be thinking about how I had the chance so many years ago to take a photo at the top of the twin towers (bottom) and see them standing tall from the Staten Island ferry (top) and how incredibly tragic it is those photos can't be recreated today.

Epic Rap Battle - Newton vs Nye

Starting the day watching a scientist rap battle really gets you pumped for a day of doing science!  If only they got the real Bill Nye and Neil deGrasse Tyson.  Now THAT would be epic!
The Epic Rap Battles of History is a video series created by Nice Peter, epicLLOYD, Dave McCary, and Maker Studios. Visit their YouTube channel (ERB) to watch more of their ridiculous raps.  The things these guys come up with are hilarious!

That is Significant

In my Google Scholar alert today was a scientific paper that I didn't think would be entirely appropriate to write a blog post about but was too hilarious to pass up.....  (disclaimer:  this article may not be appropriate for young audiences in that even as a grown-ass woman it made me giggle with immaturity...click at your own risk)

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/zoo.21137/full

That's right people... this is an article investigating the evolutionary significance of fellatio (if you don't know what it is, look it up).  Their results: what probably every male in the known universe could tell you, it happens because it feels good and there's real reward in that kind of pleasure.

But, looking past the seemingly obvious results, what I find astonishing about this paper is:
  1. someone thought to do this (as if they thought the reasons for other species would be different from that of a human - you and me baby ain't nothin' but mammals) and
  2. someone paid for this (it was paid for by a government entity: the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Poland.  Just another example of why a really good grant writer should be a key element of every research team.)

Now You See Me

I always thought my fascination for carnivores (aka dangerous animals) was spurred by the fact they’re totally badass but apparently it’s because of a deep rooted evolutionary history with predators that has influenced my visual system so dangerous animals capture and maintain my attention.

Psychologists from Duke and UC Davis studied the eye movements of 30 men and 30 women who were shown groups of photos dominated by either non-dangerous animals (impalas or lizards) or dangerous animals (lions or snakes).  Some examples are over there -->.  It turns out they all found the dangerous animal more quickly.  The researchers speculate it may be a form of anti-predator behavior left over from our primate days.
"It is likely beneficial for animals, including humans, to increase their attention toward potential threats so they can respond appropriately." -- Yorzinski, Penkunas, Platt & Coss, 2014
My response – to save them from people who respond inappropriately (aka CONSERVATION!)
