Losing a family member never gets any easier and it seems it's happening all too frequently these days. On on July 1, 2017, my grandma, Goldie Mae Farris, passed. And, while we are all heartbroken and sad to see her go, we are happy she is back with her son, Steve, and the love of her life, my Grandpa John (who passed away in 1997). She was going to be 90 later this year.

Grandma wasn't always the most affectionate women, but I knew she was proud of me, particularly for making my way back to the motherland, Texas. While she had been in California for many years, she was a Texan at heart.

Grandma was very interested in genealogy and I am very grateful for all the research she did and shared about our family history. It's because of her that I have documentation proving I'm a descendant of Irish royalty. Thanks Grandma!
Grandma raised my mother and instilled in her everything that makes her who she is, and I pretty much am my mom, so she was responsible for me. My mom is everything to me and I can't thank my grandma enough for raising the woman who became the best mom ever!

While there isn't going to be a service, there has been a memorial page made in her honor on the Chapel of Light website where everyone can share memories and photos and read the lovely obituary written about her life.

We'll miss you Grandma!

Today is the day O' the Irish and as a mostly Irish lass I like to celebrate by wearing green, drinking Guinness and eating Irish grub. And, nine years ago (wow how time flies) a few of my friends and I celebrated by dressing up in our best leprechaun inspired garb and ventured to the Gas Lamp on the Coaster to have boxties, drink Irish libations and listen to traditional Irish tunes at our favorite Irish pub, The Field.

There's an Irish saying, "May the best day of your past be the worst day of your future." Topping that day makes for a pretty fun-filled future!

Step aside... we got this...

I have been to the George Bush Presidential Library 7 times and sat at the mock oval office desk every time. In light of tomorrow's introduction of a new president, this Throwback Third Thursday (#tbtt) showcases what some of my friends and family would look like behind the desk in the oval office. What do you think you would look like in office?

President Caitlin
President Megan
President Peter
President Cathy

Tomorrow is the inauguration and the beginning of what may  be an interesting term. Based on political coverage from the past few months, we may be in for some real changes; some good, some bad. The best we can do is have a positive outlook and stay true to our morals. If either of those feel as though they are being hindered, don't just sit there and let it happen, take action. Who knows what this administration might bring. Maybe it'll all work out for the best....

Earlier this month, the world lost another beautiful soul. My Uncle Steve passed away on November 2nd, 2016; another victim of the horrible consequences of cancer.

Steve was a brilliant man and, boy, could he tell a story. He could take something mundane and weave it into a heroic tale. One of my favorites was about an epic battle he eventually won with a squirrel at their cabin.

I didn't get to spend as much time with my Uncle Steve as I would have liked, but I am glad he is no longer suffering. My mom and dad got to spend some time with him in his last days and from what they said he seemed to be at terms with his situation, ready to become part of the universe again. He was such an amazing person and it's a shame we had to lose him so soon. We're going to miss you Steve but will love you forever.

David and I were playing Family Feud on Facebook today and the question was Name a real or fictional band that has a food in their name. We failed to guess all the answers wondering why the heck Cake wasn’t up there but some random band from the 70’s called Bread was! So, I decided, I’ll text my family to see if they know who this Bread is and if my mom (who isn’t the most musical) knows who they are, then they must have been huge. Well, here’s how the conversation went and my inevitable discovery that I unintentionally “know” who Bread is thanks to my favorite high school band…

Being in the 24th grade, I have had a LOT of Spring Breaks. During undergrad at University of Washington, we were on the quarter system so Spring Break always fell between winter and spring quarter and I usually stayed up in Seattle, typically with almost an whole sorority house all to myself as everyone else went to celebrate Spring Break Woohoo (right).

Also, being an out of state student, I never went home for Easter (which sometimes overlapped with Spring Break). A couple years in a row, my sister and I joined her boyfriend's family up in Mount Vernon, WA, a city in Skagit county known for it's fields of tulips celebrate Easter amongst the flowers.

As I leave for a weekend in Galveston, this Throwback Third Thursday (#tbtt) I look back to those Spring Break Easters Erin and I spend in the tulips! I love you sister! And in a couple weeks, HAPPY EASTER!
*In the "language of flowers" a tulip bouquet is said to symbolize elegance and grace.

In an incredibly romantic turn of events, my grandfather, who had a stroke on January 4th, held on until he was officially married for 62 years to the love of his life. My grandfather was a persistent man, convincing my grandmother to marry him all those years ago and we could not be more grateful for it. He is responsible for the people all us Currys are today. Not just because without him we would literally not be here but because of the remarkable example he set for all of us. He was the best grandpa and lived a perfect life. He was such a beautiful man and we all aspire to find someone to love and love us like he loved grandma.

Thank you Grandpa for leaving us a legacy to follow through those you have influenced, showing us what family really means and, most importantly, how to love unconditionally.

Throwback Third Thursday - November 2015

Thanksgiving is exactly one week away so this Throwback Third Thursday (#tbtt) I'm giving a shout out to the family I will be spending Thanksgiving with and that I am ever so thankful for! I am who I am because of their loving insanity. They are the best!  I haven't gotten to go home for Thanksgiving since I moved to Texas. This year, late November is not only Thanksgiving but also my nephew's 1st birthday and my dad's 60th birthday. I have had enough FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) over the past 3+ years that I was not going to miss milestones like these. So even though I'll be turning around to come home for Christmas less than a month later (the usual reason I don't come home for Thanksgiving), this year I will be making the trip to spend a long weekend with the Currys celebrating.

not pictured - the aunt & uncles' lovely partners in crime but for whom I am just as thankful for: Mary, Kathy, Denny, Jim, and finally, Peggy.
oh...and we can't forget all the minions: Erin, Greg & Nolan, Callie & Tyler, Emily & Sam, Alex & Jeff, Megan, Annie, Sam & Derek, Carleen and Miranda
And most importantly: Grandma and Grandpa
